04/24/2009 - FLORISTS HONORED AT THE DISTINGUISHED WOMEN AWARDS
For Catharine Street Community Center, this is the year of the florist. On April 24, 2009, the Center honored eight talented and hard-working Dutchess County florists with Distinguished Women Awards.
The celebration took place at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel as part of the Center’s 87th Annual Meeting and Red Carpet Reception. The Distinguished Women Awards are an opportunity to stop and recognize the women around us who do good work and impact our lives in ways we often take for granted.
Past recipients of the Distinguished Women Awards presented the awards to this year’s group. This year's honorees are:
Dorothy R. Chenevert
The Green Oak Florist, Hyde Park, NY
Tina Keil
Bella Fiori of Rhinebeck, Rhinebeck, NY
Mary Mahaffey
The Annex Florist, Pawling, NY
Caroline McCloskey
Flowers by Reni, Fishkill, NY
Lyvia M. Pisanelli
Murphy’s Flower Shoppe, Poughkeepsie, NY
Marianne J. Pool
Marianne’s Floral Garden, Poughkeepsie, NY
Diane Sabellico
Sabellico Greenhouses & Florist,
Hopewell Junction, NY
Katherine L. Turner
Flower Barn, Poughkeepsie, NY
The occasion also provided an opportunity for the Center to single out two organizations that have been steadfast in their generous support of CSCC -- The Hudson River Psychiatric Center and the Rhinebeck Chamber Music Society.
In addition, this was the first year of the Steven Mann Project Exceed Awards, presented to school-age participants of the Catharine
Street Community Center for an essay or display with a historical theme. The group with the best display consisted of Blake Davids, Elijah Hansen, and Kerron McGriff, with Elijah being singled out for having made the greatest contribution to their effort. Alquan Higgs was honored for his winning essay.
As if all the good feelings about award giving and the delicious edibles were not enough, the simultaneous silent auction of beautiful floral wreaths raised enough money to help send several children to CSCC’s Summer Enrichment Program.
